Brian Joseph Patrick Matthews, 63, of Mt. Airy, MD passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017 from complications from early onset dementia.
Born March 26, 1954 in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Dorothy and Frank Matthews.
Growing up, Brian was an All-State athlete in football and basketball at Potomac High School in Maryland. Brian’s competitive nature continued as he became a successful Varsity Girls Basketball Coach for over 30 years. Under his leadership as head coach, the Linganore Lancers made six state tournament final appearances and won the state championship in 1992, 1996, and 1997. Their last state tournament title appearance was 2009. Brian finished his coaching career in 2012 with over 500 wins.
Brian received his undergraduate degree from Frostburg State University and earned his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He went on to become a high school special education teacher. Over the years he taught and inspired hundreds of students and players.
He was a lover of sports, reading, music, boogie boarding, winning (everything), and most of all, his children. Always quick with a joke or a story, he had the ability to bring laughter into every room.
