Catherine "Kitty" Tyler Smith, 82, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Franklin C. "Frank" Smith.
Born on December 24, 1934, in Frederick, MD, she was the daughter of the late Samuel L. and Mabel A. (Engle) Tyler.
She was a Class of 1953 graduate of Frederick High School. She was a member of Brook Hill United Methodist Church at Yellow Springs. She was a past board member of the Social Services of Frederick County.
Kitty and Frank were lifelong dairy farmers in Frederick County. She was instrumental in beginning the FFA in the Brunswick High School. She was a charter member of the Brunswick FFA and the FFA alumni. Kitty was the co-founder of the Brunswick Community Show held at the Brunswick High School. She was a Frederick County Farm Bureau member, member of the Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers and was a 4-H leader.
She was a very active, dedicated Democrat and served on the Democratic State Central Committee and in the League of Women Voters of Frederick County. In 1994, she was honored as the Democratic Woman of the Year. Kitty was a fixture at the Frederick County Fair Democratic tent since 1987 until her health declined.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheree Hemp and husband, Doug, and Anita Smith; and two sons, Craig Smith and Marvin Smith; two granddaughters, Laura Hemp and Patience Johnson and husband, Nathaniel; and one great-granddaughter, Abby Johnson.
Kitty was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jessica Hemp.
Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD.
Services and burial will be private.
