Alford R. Taylor, Sr., 95, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away from this life on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Country Meadows of Frederick, Maryland.

Born in 1921, he was the son of the late Ernest A. and Alma (Robinson) Taylor of Tampa, Florida. Following graduation from Plant High School in Tampa, he worked as a surveyor, scouting utility right-of-ways throughout the Southeast United States. During WW II, he served in an Army engineering battalion in the Philippines.

After the war, he attended George Washington University and graduated from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. (Many people don’t realize that Mary Washington College, historically a women’s college, admitted GIs during the postwar period.)

He spent most of his career in government service, including a long stint as a management analyst with the Defense Communications Agency during the Cold War years. Following retirement, he and his wife moved to Frederick, MD.

His wife of 67 years, Charlotte Augherton Taylor, predeceased him in June. They are survived by six children, Alford Taylor, Jr., Carolyn Woodland, Susan Lewis, George Doherty, Paul Taylor, and Alma Taylor-Smyth, and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Thomas G. Augherton, Sr., who brought Al home to meet his sister, Charlotte, when Al and Tom were students at GWU.

His oldest daughter, Mary Patricia Harman, predeceased him.

Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD, 515 S Market St, Frederick, MD. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 11 AM. Pastor Tim Shatzer, Frederick Church of the Brethren and Chaplain at Country Meadows of Frederick, will officiate.
