Gerald Alan McLane Jr., 58, died Saturday, August 3rd, in his home in Boonsboro, Maryland. He was born on June 23, 1961 at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, Illinois. Jerry graduated from Carl Sandburg in Orland Park, Illinois in 1979, and went on to study geology at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois from 1980-1986. Jerry concluded his studies at SIU in 1986, having earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in geology.
Jerry married Tracy Jo Engel on August 15, 1998 in Galena, Illinois and they had two sons, Aidan James McLane, born May 22, 1999 and Ian Michael McLane, born November 7, 2000. Jerry was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing and collecting “samples” with his rock hammer on many of his outdoor excursions. He also enjoyed building model airplanes, which he often did for his sons over the years.
As a professional geologist, Jerry had over 29 years of experience in planning and supervision of subsurface explorations, interpretation of investigation data, preparation of investigation reports, calculations, and project management. Jerry later started employment with Bechtel in 1998 at the Department of Energy (DOE) Savannah River Site as a Senior Science Specialist supporting the geological and hydrogeological aspects environmental remediation. He transferred to Bechtel’s Frederick, Maryland office in 2007 and later to the Reston, Virginia office supporting permitting, design and construction of nuclear power projects from the Reston, VA office for NS&E.
Jerry is survived by his two sons, Aidan and Ian McLane, his ex-wife Tracy (Engel) McLane, his mother Ann Carol (Dorgan) McLane, his sister Susan (McLane) Antonini, his uncle Stephen Dorgan, his aunt Mary Schwer, his niece Maegan (Peters) Hendrix, his niece Abbey (Peters) Green, his nephew Jason Peters and his nephew Ryan Peters. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Alan McLane Sr.
A memorial service is being held at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home at 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, Maryland on Sunday, August 11th from 2:00 - 4:00 pm for friends and family to pay respects.
