Jean Frey

Mrs. Jean Paula (Schoen) Frey, 87, of Frederick, died Monday, May 16, 2016, at her residence at Country Meadows. She was the beloved wife of 63 years of the late Chief Warrant Officer Walter Erwin Frey, U.S. Army (Ret.), who preceded her in death in 2009.

Born March 3, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Joseph N. and Ann M. (Mackay) Schoen.

Mrs. Frey attended Fortbonne Academy in Brooklyn, NY, and was a 1987 graduate of Frederick Community College. Mrs. Frey traveled extensively throughout Europe before settling in Frederick upon her husband’s retirement from the Army at Fort Detrick. Her many interests included fashion, tennis, writing, swimming, the Red Hat Society, opera, art, and early American pottery. In 1977, Mrs. Frey was recognized by the Frederick City Police Department for her bravery as a Good Samaritan.

Surviving are nine children, Patricia A. Borja of Derwood; Chief Master Sgt. Christopher W. Frey, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) and wife, Sandra, of San Antonio, TX; Catherine Calloway and husband, Jay, of Palm Harbor, FL; Lt. Col., Neil J. Frey, U.S. Army (Ret.) and wife, Holly, of Winchester, KS; Margarete B. De Soleil of Clearwater, FL; Constance Chappelear and husband, Walter, of Columbus, OH; Paul Frey and wife, Laurie, of Hagerstown; Matthew Frey and partner, Michael Gatty, of Palm Harbor, FL; and Major Gregory Frey, U.S. Army (Ret.) and wife, Linda, of San Antonio, TX; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, a sister, Catherine (Schoen) Wallace, of Saratoga Springs, NY, four nieces and one nephew. She will also be remembered by her dear friend, Romey Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan E. Sluger, nephew John K. Wallace and sons-in-law Anthony C. Borja, Jr. and Jerry Sluger.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 10 - 11 AM. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 11 AM, with a reception to follow at The Walkersville Social Hall. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Fort Myer, VA.

The family is deeply grateful for the kind and compassionate care provided by the staff of Frederick Memorial Hospital, the staff of Country Meadows, and the staff of Carroll Hospice and Hospice of Frederick County.
