Virginia Dyer

August 11, 1916 — October 25, 2007

On Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, Virginia Louise Dyer, 91, died peacefully surrounded by family at her home of 11 years in Rohrersville, MD, and went home to be with the Lord.

Known by her family and friends as "Ginny", "Gram" or "KCG-0375 Base," she was born Virginia Louise Williams on August 11, 1916, in Calais, Maine, to the late Marcello and Minnie Mabel Williams.

She was raised in the border town of Calais along with 17 siblings by her father, a railroad worker, and her mother, a homemaker. She graduated from the Calais Academy. Virginia was the last surviving sibling of 18, having outlived her 7 sisters and 10 brothers.

Virginia is survived by her husband of more than 70 years, Kenneth George Dyer of Rohrersville. They were united in marriage on Sept. 13, 1937 in Westbrook, Maine. Virginia was a wonderful and devoted homemaker who enjoyed caring for husband, children, and grandchildren. She loved to bake and was best known (and will be missed) for her delicious pies and green cake. She also enjoyed being a Cub Scout mom. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed sewing Mr. & Mrs. Claus dolls.

She belonged to the Mothers Club of Job's Daughters, Bethel 18, and was an original member of the Universalist Church in Silver Spring, MD. Before moving to Rohrersville, she and her husband lived in Silver Spring for more than 52 years. Virginia and Ken enjoyed spending much of their time traveling, often with the Good Sam's Club on RV camping trips around the country. They actually visited every capital in the United States!

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Pauline Frances, and husband Clifford L. Strobel of Rohrersville; son David Dyer and wife Candi of Fredericksburg, VA; 10 grandchildren, Shari Strobel and husband Glenn Lawyer of Derwood, MD, Donald Strobel and wife Dana Dudley-Strobel of Middletown, MD, Terri Strobel of Germantown, MD, Lisa Mahoney of Mt. Airy, MD, Scott Strobel and wife Carrie of Walkersville, MD, Sean Strobel and wife Teresa of Williamsport, MD, Ashleigh Davis and husband Adam of Walkersville, Sharon Jennings of Woodbridge, VA, and Leah Dyer and Hannah Dyer both of Fredericksburg. Virginia is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, Anne Marie Gaffney, Bethany Joyce, 1st Lt. Matthew Humphries, Shannon Strobel, David Jennings, Megan Jennings, Samantha Strobel, Mikayla Strobel, Tyler Strobel, and Landen Strobel, as well as 2 step great-grandchildren Paul and Maggie. She is also survived by three great-great grandchildren, Tyler Anderson, Isaac Healy, and Davin Healy.

Virginia was preceded in death by one grandson Michael David Strobel.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, Oct. 29, at Bast Funeral Home in Boonsboro. The Rev. Dean Pryor will officiate. Interment will be in Brownsville Heights Cemetery in Brownsville, MD.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Oct. 28, from 2 to 5 P.M. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 (www.hwcmd.org).
