A. Jane Tritt

September 29, 1936 — October 12, 2025

Frederick

Mrs. A. Jane Tritt, a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and colleague, passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025; exactly one year after the passing of her husband, Jack. She was born on September 29, 1936 in Danville, PA, the daughter of Harold O. Kramer and Mildred V. Maurer Kramer. She was also the stepdaughter of Kurtz Handshew. She was the devoted widow of Jack, her high school sweetheart and the loving mother of two children and grandmother of five grandchildren.

Mrs. Tritt received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in Chemistry from Shippensburg State College, now Shippensburg University, at a time when she was the only woman in her field of study at the school. She also earned an Advanced Teaching Certificate in Chemistry and Physics, following courses at The University of Maryland, Shippensburg University, and Hood College.

Mrs. Tritt retired as a teacher from the Frederick County Public School system after a distinguished 41-year career. She took great pride in helping her students succeed. She spent extra hours outside of the classroom to review and provide additional guidance to help her students really understand the advanced subject material. Several students returned to let her know that they were able to succeed in their collegiate pursuits because of her support. In fact, one of her students nominated Mrs. Tritt for a state-wide Outstanding Teacher award that was granted. Her teaching experience included teaching Science at Shippensburg High School (1958-1959), Mathematics at Southwestern High School in Hanover, PA (1959-1961), Chemistry, Physics and Physical Science at Linganore High School (1961-1963 and 1965 -1975), and Chemistry I and II, as well as AP Chemistry (1975 - 1999), at Middletown High School. She retired in 1999.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Tritt continued her efforts to promote the accessibility of advanced education, especially to develop highly trained and educated teachers. Along with her husband, they founded the Undergraduate Scholarship Field of Interest Fund to provide scholarships for post-secondary education based on financial need. She was heavily involved with P.E.O., a Philanthropic Educational Organization serving as president in 2004-2006 and 2016-2018; the Community Foundation of Frederick County (MD); and the Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association, also serving one year as president.

She particularly enjoyed entertaining family and friends, always making people feel welcome. She adored her grandchildren and took great pride in attending and supporting their numerous school and extra-curricular activities. She loved needlework, gardening, growing show mums, playing bridge, and travel. She also enjoyed spending time with her wide circle of friends. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Frederick.

Mrs. Tritt is survived by her son James T. Tritt and his wife Michelle of East Berlin, PA and her daughter Jennifer A. Kmiecik and her husband Daniel of Middletown, MD. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Nicole and Ally Tritt, and John, Todd and Mae Kmiecik. Her twin sister, Jean Bates, of Allentown, PA, sister, Kay Shotsberger, of Ickesburg, PA, and six nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 2 - 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Oppossumtown Pike in Frederick. A celebration of Jane’s life will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Frederick.
