Anthony “Tony” Saavedra, 48, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. He faced his illness with extraordinary strength and determination, fighting until the very end.

Tony was the loving husband of Kari Turner Saavedra, with whom he celebrated 20 wonderful years of marriage this year, and the devoted father of Roland and Sofia, who were the pride and joy of his life. He was the beloved son of Dr. Joseph and Virginia Saavedra and cherished son-in-law of Rev. Frank, Sr. and Cheryl Turner.

Tony is also survived by his brother, Richard Saavedra (Stacy); his sister, Evelyn Turner (Frank, Jr.); and his sister-in-law, Krystal Martz (Rich). He was a beloved uncle to his nephews, Michael and Jonathan Saavedra, and his nieces, Reagan and Reese Turner, and Amelia, Laila, and Maizey Martz. He will also be lovingly remembered by his extended family and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his humor, kindness, and unique way of seeing the world.

Tony had a creative spirit and a curious mind. A talented artist and avid collector of vintage toys, he appreciated the memories and stories behind the things he loved. He was a gifted storyteller whose humor and attention to detail could turn an everyday experience into a story worth telling. His collection of unexpected facts made conversations with him memorable.

Tony was an exceptionally talented artist and accomplished book cover designer whose creativity and passion for storytelling left a lasting mark on the publishing world. Throughout his remarkable career, he designed more than 10,000 book covers, including works by Agatha von Trapp, Jamie Farr, and Arthur Marx, son of the legendary Groucho Marx. His extraordinary ability to capture the essence of a story through his artwork earned him recognition and admiration throughout the industry. Tony also hosted a daily radio show dedicated to books, bookstores, authors, and readers, where his knowledge, enthusiasm, and engaging personality made him an instant success. His creativity, humor, and passion for his craft will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

Tony held a special place in his heart for Vermont, a place that always felt like a second home and where he cherished time spent with family. He also enjoyed a good feast of Maryland blue crabs, especially when surrounded by the people he loved. Tony had a deep appreciation for music that spanned all decades and genres. He loved discovering new artists, revisiting old favorites, and sharing his passion for music with others. A creative spirit in every sense, Tony also enjoyed playing guitar with friends and writing song lyrics.

Above all, Tony loved his family. He will be remembered for his kindness, protective nature, natural charisma, sense of humor, and the remarkable strength he demonstrated throughout his life. Even during the most difficult moments of his battle with cancer, Tony's compassion and concern for others never wavered. Despite all he was going through, he never lost sight of the people he loved or the importance of making sure they knew how much they meant to him.

Tony’s family is forever grateful for the love, kindness, and support of family, friends, and the community throughout his journey. Special thanks to the care team at John R. Marsh Cancer Center and Frederick Hospice for the compassion and care they provided along the way.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Monday, November 9, 2026, at Stauffer Funeral home where a celebration of Tony's life journey will begin at 11 a.m. Rev. Warren Rice will officiate.
