Barba Jean Speak

Barba Jean Speak, 80, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Heartfields Assisted Frederick.  With her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Delmar Speak for 62 years.

Born on July 2, 1943, in Columbus, GA, she was the daughter of the late Harry Thomas and Mary Ethel (Bowlus) Shaffer.

 Barba Attended Frederick High School. She was a loving wife and a devoted mother. Her passion in life was raising her daughters and her grandchildren. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader and helping with Sunday school classes. She loved family gatherings. She loved to cook and enjoyed hosting The Shaffer Family Thanksgiving and our family Christmas Eve gatherings. She also coordinated the Speak reunion for many years with much joy.  Barba was very good with  drawing and painting. In her younger years a  painting that she made of famous people from around the world was chosen to be placed in a museum in Baltimore. She loved making crafts and listening to music. She very much enjoyed her ceramic classes she would attend with her friends at the Betsons house.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Karen Woodward and husband (Charlie) and Colleen Lewis and husband (John). Two grandchildren Donnie Wachter 111 (Caroline) and Amber Conlon (Joey) One great granddaughter Carmen Conlon. 2 Brothers Danial Shaffer (June)  Lamar Shaffer (Donna)  She was preceded by 2 brothers Douglas and Thomas Shaffer along with 1 half - sister Renay Shaffer.  She leaves behind many well loved nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Also a special friend Carol Stanfield 

The family would like to give special thanks to Visiting Angels, DaVita at Balenger Creek, Heartfields Assisted living, Hospice, and to Rev. Bob Manthey for all their loving care. 

A celebration of life service will be held at ERUCC 15 W. Church St. Frederick, MD, Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11 am.
