Barbara Diane Eaves Crum, 90, of Walkersville, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Born January 16, 1936, in Frederick, MD, she was the only child of late Clarence Albert Eaves and Cathryn Naomi Fogle Eaves. Barbara married William Bruce Crum, Sr. on June 22, 1952 at the Walkersville United Methodist Church.
Barbara attended schools in Walkersville and Frederick, as well as, attended the Visitation Academy.
She was a hardworking and dedicated wife and mother of five children. A lifelong farmer and homemaker, Barbara valued her family and home. She also loved to go shopping and eating out, and loved to sew, bake, sing and play the piano and loved her kitties. Barbara dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren always wanted to know what was going on in their lives.
Barbara and Bill were dairy farmers in Walkersville from 1953 - 1990. After discontinuing the dairy operation, they became crop farmers from 1990 until 2024.
Faith, family, and friends were important to Barbara. She was an active member of the Glade Valley Grange, and lifelong member of the Walkersville United Methodist Church. Barbara was an active member of the Frederick County Farm Bureau and a devoted member of the Women’s Leadership Committee.
For many years she worked at the Glade Valley Food Bank, as well as, at the Farm and Garden Building at the Great Frederick Fair, where she was a life member.
In 1976, she had the honor of hosting President Gerald Ford at her home during the presidential campaign where the president spoke with a group of farmers about their concerns and their hopes for the future of agriculture in America. In the late 1970s grandsons of the then French Ambassador spent two summers working on Bill and Barbara’s farm learning about farm life in the United States.
In her retirement, she assisted her husband in authored three books on Frederick County one-room schoolhouses. She was especially interested in and was dedicated to preserving the National Register-listed Native American site located on her farm. In 2013 she received the Maryland Preservation Award for Preservation Partnerships for the 2013 Field Session in Maryland Archeology.
She will be missed by all who knew her as a kind, compassionate, and loving person.
She was the proud mother of five children, William B. Jr. and wife Atsuko, Barbara Ann Crum Barnette and husband, Fred, Mark Edward and wife Karen, Susan Marie Crum Culler and husband David and Mary Ann Crum Lantz and husband, Steve. All five children graduated from college.
In addition, she is survived by seven grandchildren, Kevin, Kyle, Grayson and Danny Barnette, Matthew and Andy Culler and Evan Lantz; four step-grandchildren: Alyssa, Halden, Sem Brubaker and Tessa Brubaker Coy-Dibley; and eleven great grandchildren: Brody, Lillian, Abigail, Felix, Kolton, Lydia, Ezra, Addison and Eden Rose Barnette and Eliana and Chris Lantz.
She is also survived by her brother-in-law Clyde C. Crum and his wife Catherine, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Bill and infant daughter Jean Elizabeth, and her grandson, Christopher Steven Lantz
The family will receive friends at the Walkersville United Methodist Church at 22 Main Street, Walkersville, MD from 10-11am on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The funeral will begin at 11am at the church. The Rev. Dr. Chip Lee will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Woodsboro, MD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Chris Lantz Memorial Fund, 77 West Pennington Street, Oakland, MD 21550. Inspired by Chris Lantz, the Memorial Fund established in his name is a charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization which is dedicated to providing financial assistance to outstanding students by awarding college/university scholarships to the future leaders of our country.
