Barbara J. Maxwell, 88, of Frederick, Maryland, passed from this life on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center in Frederick.
Born on her grandmother's farm using a local midwife, Barbara Jean Richesin, entered the world on October 26, 1937 to her late parents, Bronce and Hulah Gibson.
Barbara was a 1955 graduate of Everett High School in Maryville, TN. She had an accounting degree and worked for (then) Linton Shafer CPA firm in Frederick for many years. She then went on to work for other accounting firms where she traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and United States training clients on accounting software.
She was also a full-time homemaker who loved gardening and her indoor plants. She embraced southern-style cooking and baking until she started working when her sons became teenagers. Barbara was a genuine, caring soul who was loved by anyone who knew her.
Barbara was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Frederick (strong believer in Jesus Christ as her savior) for close to 40 years. She was a Red Hat Society member for many years.
She met her husband, Richard Maxwell, while he was stationed near Maryville, TN in McGhee Tyson Air Force Base. They were married for 68 years until Richard’s passing. The couple remained in the Maryville - Knoxville area where Richard received his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee. They then moved to Charleston, SC, San Antonio TX, Bryn Mawr, PA, Rockville, MD, Poolesville, MD and, in 1976, into the Myersville, MD area. Richard and Barbara raised both of their boys in this home where they were able to attend the nearby Middletown High School. They attended extended family vacations at least once a year in the Thousand Islands area of NY and Myrtle Beach, SC.
She will be missed by her sons, Mark and Terry Maxwell; sister, Brenda Norman; niece, Dena Keasler Altman; and nephews, Sean Keasler and Kelly Burns.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Maxwell; sister, Donna Jennings (Charles); and nephew, Cary Burns
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 40 Fulton Avenue in Walkersville, MD. Rev. Tim May will officiate. Burial will be private.
