Betty Jean Barrick

Betty Jean Barrick, 79, of Frederick, Maryland passed from this life at her home on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Born on October 29, 1946 in Frederick, MD she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Ruby Rebecca (Miller) Mathews.

Jean graduated from Frederick High School, class of 1964, and married James William Barrick on June 20, 1964. James passed away on April 5, 2008.

She is survived by her sons, Matthew Scott and wife, Lori, of Frederick, MD, John William of Thurmont, MD, and Christopher Alan of Hedgesville, WV; grandchildren Hansen Scott Barrick, Hayden Paul Barrick (Katie Plant-Barrick), Ryan Axel Barrick (Umah Ali) of Frederick, MD, and Logan Amanda Barrick (Parker Thompson) of Stephens City, VA; and great-grandson Bennett Paul Barrick of Frederick, MD.

She is also survived by her sister, Faye Virginia Zimmerman of Frederick, MD, John Thomas Mathews (Gail Mathews) of Thurmont, MD, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to many other loved ones, Jean was predeceased in 2001 by a special nephew, Ryan E. Zimmerman. At the time of Ryan’s passing Jean was in need of a liver transplant and, because he was an organ donor, his family was able to directly donate his liver for her transplant.

After having an ileostomy in 2015, Jean found she needed to travel to Gettysburg, PA to find support for this new path in life. As a lasting legacy to her resolve, she founded the Frederick Area Ostomy Support Group based at Frederick Health, which is still active today.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 29, 2026 from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to a short 3 p.m. service at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. Internment will be private.

The family would like to thank Frederick Health Hospice and Assisting Hands of Frederick for their kind and caring support during Jean’s last few weeks.
