Betty Grace Brandenburg Burgee

September 13, 1922 — February 26, 2023

Betty Grace Brandenburg Burgee, 100, of New Market, Maryland, died peacefully on February 26, 2023, at Lorien Mt. Airy.  Born on September 13, 1922 in Foxville, Maryland, she was the first born of the late Ray S. and Rae (Hauver) Brandenburg.  She was the wife of the late Knowlton Burgee who passed away in 1978.

Betty retired in 1984 after 25 years of service as a telephone operator with C&P,  Bell Atlantic, and AT&T Monrovia operations.  She was an avid reader and at 100 years of age was still reading her newspaper every day.   In her earlier years she enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, and traveling.  She especially enjoyed her visits to Scotland and Hawaii.  She was a former member of Telephone Pioneers of America and Rainbow Belles.  Betty was a faithful supporter of the Red Cross blood drives, donating many, many times over her life span.  She enjoyed sharing her swimming pool with family and friends, and following the Orioles on TV.  Betty was an excellent cook, especially her vegetable soup and apple dumplings, and never met a piece of pie she didn’t like.

Surviving are her children Knowlton (Bud) Burgee, Jr. of Gaithersburg, Briony Campbell of New Market, Bruce Burgee and wife Linda of Middletown: sisters Nancy and Julia Brandenburg of Foxville, brothers Harold (Bill) Brandenburg of Hagerstown and Arthur Brandenburg and wife Sonja of Foxville: beloved grandchildren Carrye Hicks and husband Alex of Davidsonville, Kellie Carson and husband Toby of New Market, Brannon Burgee and fiance’ Cheryl Martorell of Frederick, Brent Burgee and wife Abbey of Frederick, Betsy Moore and husband Jason of Middletown: beloved great-grandchildren Asher and Harper Hicks, Daphne Grace and Hendrix Carson, Vivienne, Ellis and Nash Burgee, Emory and Charlotte Moore and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Betty was predeceased  by brothers Ray S. Brandenburg, Jr., Eugene Brandenburg, sister Carolyn Fishack, daughter-in law Shirley Kraft Burgee and remembered fondly by Shirley’s children Diana, Michele and Edward, and their children and grandchildren.

To respect Betty’s wishes there will be no public visitation or service.   A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are with Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at StaufferFuneralHome.com.
