Beverly Wachter Hubble

March 19, 1938 — October 30, 2017

Beverly J. Wachter "Bev" Hubble, 79, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017 at Johns Hopkins from complications of recently diagnosed bladder cancer. She was the daughter of the late Mehrle N. and Catherine E. Wolfe Wachter. Her husband, Byron L. Hubble, predeceased her in 1995. In her words, the Lord blessed her with two children, a favorite son, Kenley T. Hubble (Doris Myers) and a favorite daughter, Colby D. Hubble (Jimmy Summers, Jr). She is also survived by three grandsons, Nolan, Holden and Cayden Hubble, all of Ijamsville; a sister, Shirley Halsey, of Ocean City, MD; sister-in-law, Joyce Hubble, of New Market, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann and William Perkins of Frederick and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pauline and Richard Knott of Walkersville. She will also be remembered by Jimmy's son, Tanner Summers, of Ijamsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Robert Halsey and Winton Hubble.

She spent most of her young childhood growing up in Pearl (near Jug Bridge) while her father worked at the local grocery store Pearl Bargain House. Her parents then opened a grocery store/gas station on Old US Route 40, prior to Interstate 70, between New Market and Frederick in 1946 and moved the family to that area. Bev and Shirley learned at a young age to pump gas, check oil and clean windshields. While they were out of school during the summer they ran an Aunt Lucy ham sandwich stand in the yard next to the store. During that summer Bev gained 14 pounds from eating the sandwiches.

Bev graduated from Frederick High School Class of 1956 which she was very proud. She was very athletic and played several sports during school and after graduation. Bev enjoyed meeting with her classmates the first Monday of the month at the Golden Corral.

After high school she worked for a short time as a waitress at the Southern Restaurant on North Market Street prior to beginning to work at Ft. Detrick in the Civilian Personnel Office. She thoroughly enjoyed working there until she retired in 1995 to take care of her terminally ill husband.

Bev was part of a family where there was no shortage of sale clerks/cashiers. There was always a line of clerks/cashiers in the Wachter family that could help with an auction. From the beginning she was part of the Spring Consignment Auction at the Frederick Fairgrounds that was started by her father Mehrle Wachter and Jim Trout in 1963. She also clerked sales for George Lease, Jimmy Summers and Marvin Curtis and until health problems plagued her, starting in June 2016, she was the regular cashier for 20 plus years for Auctioneer Howard Parzow.

For many years, she helped her mother with the various activities at the New Market Fire Department including banquets, serving the New Market Lions Club dinners at their bi-monthly meetings and the annual carnival.

She was one of the forces behind starting Bingo at the Frederick Moose Lodge many years ago and was a dedicated cashier there until June 2016.

Another passion of hers was the Great Frederick Fair. She had been the assistant harness racing secretary for many years helping her father, the late Mehrle Wachter, who was the racing secretary until his death in 1984. At that point, she took over as race secretary and held that position through this years fair. Although she admitted she didn't know much about a horse, she thoroughly enjoyed working with the horsemen. As she suffered with a lot of pain this year during the fair, she still managed to attend 7 out of 9 days, attend 2 grandstand shows and make it up to the judges tower all 4 days of harness racing.

When it was time for the Wolfe family reunion, she couldn't wait. A few years ago she was hospitalized during the reunion and tried to insist that the doctors give her a 4 hour pass to attend her reunion because "I just love my cousins!"

She was the rock of our family. She was a very loving, sympathetic and compassionate person who would do anything to help anyone. She was known for giving several people a place to stay while they "got their feet back on the ground." Most of the time, this came complete with meals and sometimes she would loan them a vehicle. Bev loved visiting with people and talking. Regardless of her plans for the day if someone stopped by to visit, her plans came to a halt because visiting with friends was more important.

Bev was a member of the New Market District Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Frederick Women of the Moose Chapter 347 and NARFE.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick. The family will also receive friends one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

A celebration of Beverly's life journey will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017, at Stauffer Funeral Home. Rev. Tim May will officiate. Interment will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the New Market District Volunteer Fire Department 76 West Main Street New Market, MD 21774 or to the Women of the Moose (WOTM) Chapter 347 PO Box 3762 Frederick, MD 21701.
