Bruce Hamilton O’Neal, aged 77, of Jefferson, MD, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, December 19, 2024, with his wife of 32 years, Elaine (Dunn) O’Neal, by his side. Bruce was born in Bethesda, MD, to Eugene P. and Doris (Stanley) O’Neal on August 17, 1947.
In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by a sister, Susan Gallion, of Harrisburg, PA, and many nephews and nieces. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, Eugene Purtis O’Neal and Doris O’Neal and a brother, Steven O’Neal.
Early in his life, Bruce thought of himself as a religious person, but when he saw the true condition of his soul in the light of God’s truth, he experienced a genuine spiritual rebirth and gave his life to serve Jesus. Ever since that day he always carried Gospel tracts in his pocket and gladly shared the love of Jesus to anyone he met. As a long-time Sears, Roebuck and Company employee, Bruce excelled in customer service. But, his joy was to share the words from the Bible and pray for any customer who expressed a need beyond retail goods from the store. Customers often came to see him for his big smile and encouragement.
Bruce was also affectionately known as “The Bishop” by his church family of First Love Fellowship. He was a charter member of the fellowship and also served on the Board of Trustees for many years. Bruce had deep respect and appreciation for his pastor, Carl Dove, whose family also welcomed him and taught him the intricacies of Italian cooking. As a result, Bruce was often in the kitchen serving up a dish of pasta or other hearty meal for those who stopped by his home. He was a true example of a giver whose kitchen and door were always open for those in need, especially from his church.
He received a Certificate of Ministry for his love of the Word of God and faithfulness to preach and share with others, especially at a local nursing home. Bruce had a huge stack of worn index cards with Bible verses, and he often recited them. He joined with his wife, who he loved dearly, to pray for many spiritual needs that presented themselves. They were united in a special agreement for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be fulfilled in their lives as well as in that of others.
A favorite scripture that Bruce loved to share was from the Gospel of John, chapter 3 and verses 16-17: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.”
This truth brought so much peace and comfort to his wife and friends when Bruce stepped out of this world and into the presence of His Savior.
There was surely a grand reunion with loved ones that passed on before him.
He will be missed by everyone that knew him. But it’s not goodbye; it’s till we meet again.
Bruce will be buried at Rock Gap Veterans Cemetery.
Services will be private.
