Carol Ann Toms Divel, 83, of Unionville, MD, died on March 2, 2026 at home surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Herbert A. Divel Sr.
Born December 31, 1942 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Dehaven Toms and Myrtle Fogle Toms.
She was raised in foster care at a young age and remained close to her foster siblings.
Carol worked in child care for many years and attended Locust Grove Church of the Brethren when she was able.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, Cricket the cat, watching game shows, cooking shows, American Idol and The Voice. An exceptional cook, her family loved her cheesecake.
Just a few days prior to her passing she said, "God told me he is gonna take care of me."

Carol is survived by her son, John Johnson Sr., of Frederick; daughter, Dawn Carns and husband, Chuck Carns, of Unionville; stepchildren, Herbert Divel Jr. and wife, Rebecca, Rick Divel and wife Carol, and Melissa Divel; grandchildren, John Johnson Jr., Robert Johnson, Jason Manning, Sarah Morris (husband Joseph), Kasey Carns (fiancé Calvin Ledford), and Hannah Carns; step-grandchildren, Rick Divel Jr. (wife Shannon), Ashleigh Divel, and Allen Divel; great-grandchildren, Ariyah Johnson, Skylar Morris, and Magnolia Ledford; step-grandchildren, Brandon, Brooke, and Elizabeth; sister-in-law, Vicky Toms; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Eileen, Bruce and their family; and her former husband and father of her children, Irvin Johnson.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Laurie Johnson; grandchild, Aaron Johnson; sisters, Catherine May Heerd, Frances Louise Lawson, Edna Marie Crum, and Lillian Virginia Holmes; and her brothers, Charles Edward Toms, Mehrl Franklin Toms, James Donald Toms, Dehaven Samuel Toms Jr., and Robert Eugene Toms Sr.
Private burial will be in Linganore United Methodist Church Cemetery.
A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday March 14, 2026 at Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, 13356 Glissans Mill Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771, with a light meal following service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Frederick Health Hospice, 1 Frederick Health Way, Frederick, MD 21701.
