Baltimore

Charles Summerfield Austin III (“Chuck”), of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Born on November 6, 1931, he was the son of Charles Austin Jr. and Dorothy (Buschman) Austin. He was 94 years old and leaves behind a legacy of devotion to family, friends, and community.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Beverly Smith Austin; his beloved sons Gregory and wife Kimberly, and Douglas and lifetime partner Suzanne. He was predeceased by his son, Charles Austin IV, whose memory remained close to his heart throughout his life.

“Pop-Pop,” as he was lovingly known, is survived by four grandchildren: Tyler and husband Brian, Evan and girlfriend Natalie, Grant and fiancée Abigail, and Julianne and husband Tyson. He is also survived by his dear sister Dorothy and husband, Dr. Aristides Alevizatos, as well as many nieces and nephews of whom he was deeply fond. He is affectionately remembered by his “fourth” son Mark Todd and wife Tammy as well as Karen Graham, a cherished daughter-like figure.

As a young man, Chuck served on the Ocean City Beach Patrol, taking pride in being one of 12 lifeguards responsible for the shore. He attended Guilford College, where he met his wife, Bev. Following graduation, he served in the United States Marine Corps, where he taught combat swimming and lifesaving.

Chuck later served with the Braddock Heights Volunteer Fire Company, earning the rank of Captain. He was a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Frederick. Most recently the club honored him by renaming its Rotary Fellow Award the Charles S. Austin III Award. He was recognized for 61 years of perfect attendance and for his long record of service, including many years as secretary emeritus.

Later in life, he found great happiness boating on the Chesapeake Bay with his family. He was always ready to lend a hand, no matter the task, and was known for his warm hugs, generous kisses, and unmistakable smile.
