Christian "Chris" Frederick Qualls, age 58, passed away unexpectedly on July 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and unshakeable devotion to those he loved.
Born on April 1, 1968, in Bowie, Maryland, Chris brought a natural sense of humor and light into the world from day one. After graduating from Wittenberg University in Ohio, he chose an adventurous detour over law school, heading out to work at ski resorts alongside one of his closest friends—a chapter of his life he always looked back on with absolute joy. Later, Chris built a successful career in sales within the environmental and waste services industry, ultimately serving as a dedicated Key Account Manager for Spring Valley.
To know Chris was to know a man who loved to host and bring people together. He was a phenomenal cook, happiest when he was smoking meat, grilling, or hosting his legendary Thanksgiving dinners. His favorite place to be was his own backyard—taking in the view from his back deck with his fuzzy companion, Harley (aka the Muppet), or watching his beloved Washington Capitals, Commanders, and Baltimore Orioles on TV from the comfort of his hot tub. Chris was rarely seen without one of his signature Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirts or a piece of gear from his massive collection of sports jerseys.
Above all else, Chris was a father whose world revolved around his children. He never missed a moment—standing proudly in the crowd at every single game, band performance, and theater production, cheering them on with everything he had. When his children were young, he became a favorite fixture in the neighborhood, hosting weekly fire pits for his kids and all of their friends. He was even Santa Claus at Walkersville High’s annual Breakfast With Santa for several years. He was the kind of person who would help anyone, anywhere, with whatever they needed, offering a steady hand and a quick-witted joke even in the darkest of times.
Chris’s laughter, generosity, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed but forever cherished by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved children, Cole Frederick Qualls and Josephine Aja Qualls; their mother, Leigh Jonker; his devoted mother, Nancy Rhine; his sister, Elizabeth Gambino, and her husband, Mike; and his cherished nephews, Justin, Andrew, and Tony, as well as a community of lifelong friends.
Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and celebrate Chris's life during a public visitation. Jerseys and Hawaiian shirts are encouraged!
The family will receive friends on from 4:00 - 6:00 pm on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 40 Fulton Avenue, Walkersville Maryland.
A private service for the family will be performed at a later date.
