Clay Leroy Griffin

Clayborne Leroy Griffin Jr., known affectionately by everyone as Clay, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 17, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born on September 23, 1948, in Beaufort, North Carolina, Clay was the eldest of six children born to the late Clayborne Leroy Griffin Sr. and Laura Lena Tayloe.

At just 17 years old, Clay enlisted in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge before building a fulfilling career in the car rental industry.

On May 11, 1997, Clay married Linda Gail Griffin. They shared 26 wonderful years together until Linda’s passing on May 18, 2023.

Music was one of Clay’s greatest passions. A talented drummer, he played with his band, Trademark, performing at venues throughout the Washington, D.C., area. Years later, the band reunited to play at his stepdaughter’s biannual pool parties, where everyone knew they could count on hearing Clay enthusiastically perform “his song,” Taking Care of Business.

When Clay wasn’t out shopping or catching up with friends, he was happiest at home with his faithful dog, Lizzie, watching his favorite cowboy movies and television shows.

Clay never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel welcome with an easy smile, a corny joke, and a laugh that invited everyone else to join in. He was also known for his signature goodbyes, especially his favorite joke:

“What did the epileptic say to his doctor?

Seizure later.”

So, in true Clay fashion, we won’t say goodbye.

Clay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Gail Griffin, and his parents, Clayborne Leroy Griffin Sr. and Laura Lena Tayloe.

He is survived by his children, Brandon Scott Griffin Sr. and Sharon Griffin Harris; his stepdaughters, Debbie Henry (Tom), Patti Deariso (Devin), and Susan Robinson; his grandchildren, Brandon Scott Griffin Jr., Hailey Harris, and Stephanie Henry; his faithful companion, Lizzie; and his five younger siblings, Eugene Griffin, Wendall Ray Griffin, Cynthia A. Kidd, Patricia E. Price, and Debbie A. Lee.

A service celebrating Clay’s life will be held on Friday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum in Frederick, Maryland.
