Clyde Tyrone Burwell, Sr.

Clyde Tyrone Burwell Sr, was born on December 14, 1949 in Henderson, NC. He was the beloved son of the late John Wesley Burwell Jr, and Marie Richardson Foster. Clyde attended Henderson Institute where he graduated.

Clyde enlisted in the United States Army in 1972 where he fought in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged from the Army not long thereafter. After the Army, he did numerous jobs, however singing was his passion.

Tyrone performed with various groups (including Authentiks Unlimited, The Legendary Clovers, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes, and The Tree of Life Gospel group, as well as his own group NAChords).

In 1987 Clyde(Tyrone) along with Al Johnson produced his first single “Memories”, and “Sweet Sexy Thing”. In January 2003 they also produced his first Gospel album “Heaven Bound” Tyrone was an advent vocalist.

Tyrone met Shirley Gilbert in March of 1975 who he later married in September 2nd, 2007. Tyrone is preceded in death by his two brothers, Ronald Burwell, and John Marlon Burwell Sr.

Tyrone is survived by his beloved wife Shirley L. Gilbert-Burwell, his daughter Nicole Anjanette (Burwell) Rodney of NJ, and his son Clyde Tyrone Burwell Jr, of MD.

Tyrone is also survived by his brother Wesley Burwell of NY, his sister LeVerne Burwell-Grant(Roy) of NC, including nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
