David H. Chang of New Market, MD passed away peacefully on Father’s Day June 15, 2025 at the age of 96. He was born in Nantung, China on May 4, 1929. He was the son of the late Cha-Ping Chang (father) and Shu-E Chang (mother).
David was a caring husband, devoted father, doting grandfather, generous brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife Shu-Liang, his daughters Eve Chang of Flemington, NJ (husband Robert Chigi), and Ellen Chang of New Market, MD (husband Guy Zaybekian), and daughter in law Grace Ho-Chang of Vancouver, WA. He was a proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Ryan Zaybekian, Travis Chigi, Austin Chang, Jackie Zaybekian, Audrey Chang, and Ashleigh Chigi. David was predeceased by his beloved son Dr. Edward K Chang (2007).
David lived a life that was filled with many adventures. He escaped alone from communist China at the age of 20 to seek refuge in Hong Kong. He eventually made his way to Taiwan to start a new life. It was in Taiwan that he met his wife of 65 years and started their family. They eventually immigrated to the United States in 1973 and settled in NJ. David and his wife made their last move to Frederick, MD in 2006.
David yearned for knowledge and schooling. That love for education was reflected in his multiple college and graduate degrees. David graduated from his first university in China at the age of 19, then received a master’s degree in engineering from Penn State in 1954, and finally an MBA from MIT at the age of 45. David embarked on various career paths throughout his life. He started his professional life as a college professor of engineering and mathematics. His next employment as an Industrial Engineer led to a long career in the textile industry. David finally retired as the General Manager of a textile import/export firm which he helped start.
David’s knowledge of the textile industry led to his recognition as a subject matter expert in the field of cotton. Through the demand for his expertise, he and his wife spent the latter years of his career traveling throughout the world for consulting and conferences, including an invitation to the Masters golf tournament as a personal guest of the governor. He was proud of the fact he had traveled to every single continent except Antarctica.
