Dennis Edward Strother 85 of Middletown Maryland passed away on Tuesday August 4, 2026, after a 6-year battle resulting from a stroke. He was the beloved husband of Nanci Strother for 61 years. He was born at the Naval Ship Yard Hospital in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He was the first-born son of the late Winifred G. Strother and Margaret Elizabeth Strother. Dennis would joke about being conceived in Hawaii while his parents were stationed there. Dennis grew up in Old Lyme and later Mystic Connecticut. He is survived by his wife Nanci, his son Thomas, his two grandchildren, his brother Bobby of Georgia, his sisters Margaret of New Hampshire, Barbara and Kathy of Florida and Carol Anne of Georgia. They have always been a close loving family, truly a tribute to their parents. As a young boy, Dennis aspired to become a Naval Officer, he fulfilled his dream and served in the United States Navy Submarine Service for twenty-two and a half years. He served on the James Maddison, Will Rogers, the Henry Clay and COMSUBPAC in Hawaii. He loved the Navy and serving his country. When thanked for his service he would say, with a smile "It was my pleasure." Dennis graduated from St. Francis College High School in Biddeford, Maine with honors. He attended Providence College in Rhode Island before enlisting into the Navy. While in the Navy he made the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) program and earned the degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of Miami in Oxford Ohio. After graduating he attended Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island. He also earned the degree of Master of Science in Administration Management Engineering with honors from George Washington University in Washington located in the District of Columbia. After retiring from the Navy, he found work in the defense industry. Dennis was a member of Saint John's Catholic Church in Frederick Maryland where he served as an Usher for two years and later of Holy Family Catholic Church in Middletown Maryland. He loved sports, mainly the New York Yankees and the New York Giants as well as most college sports to include the University of Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team. He also enjoyed running. He ran in the Honolulu marathon three times while stationed in Hawaii. Dennis was a bright Star, a strong good-hearted man that enjoyed and loved his family and friends. He loved to make people laugh. He is loved and missed so very much. A visitation and memorial service will be held at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland 21702 on Wednesday September 16, 2026, from 2pm to 3pm, with a service to begin at 3 pm. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
