Smith, Sr., a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 19, 2025, at Gilchrist Hospice Center in Towson, MD, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and warm memories. Born on June 30, 1929, in Hancock, Maryland, Donald exemplified a hard-working spirit that enriched the lives of those around him.
Married for an extraordinary 75 years to his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth (nee Harris) Smith, Donald's life was a testament to lasting companionship. Together, they created a nurturing home filled with laughter, joy, and fond memories. He created a loving family with his children Donald R. Smith, Jr. (deceased), Victoria Smith-Thompson (Jonathon) and Regina A. Smith. Granddaughter Elizabeth-Ann Smith Thompson is among those who will remember him fondly, holding close the lessons and love he imparted.
Donald was a proud graduate of North Street High School in Hagerstown, MD. He embarked on a fulfilling career with 12 years at the B & O Railroad and 25 years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where his contributions were recognized through various esteemed awards.
Donald was not only a diligent worker, but also a man of many passions. He possessed a fantastic sense of humor and enjoyed quality outings with family. He took joy in simple pleasures such as indulging in ice cream runs and leisurely walks with his family—moments that he cherished deeply. An ardent lover of the great outdoors, Donald found solace in hunting and fishing, often relishing in the peacefulness these activities provided. He enjoyed just getting outside and mowing the lawn and working in the vegetable garden with his wife. His enthusiasm didn't wane at home; he had a penchant for taking care of his vehicles. He ensured that his family was taken care of, his commitment to them was steadfast, marking him not just as a provider, but as a presence of unwavering love and support.
Donald leaves behind brothers Hubert, Leo, and Stanley Smith, along with numerous nieces and nephews who were touched by his kind-hearted nature. He joins in spirit his mother Margaret Ellen and father James Smith, his brothers James, Paul, Fred and Jack, his sisters Gladys Dotson, Pauline Brooks, and Patricia Webster, who now rest in eternal peace.
