Donna Rae Hawes, 81, of Brunswick, MD, passed on November 22, 2024 after a courageous battle fighting kidney cancer.
Donna spent her life as a member of the Brunswick community. Graduating from Brunswick High School class of 1961 and marrying her high school sweetheart, Wayne Hawes. They raised their three children: Kim, Dale and Tod on Ninth Avenue and remaining in their home surrounded by them until her passing.
Donna’s career began at what was known then as the Atomic Energy Commission located in Germantown, MD. She took a break from her career to raise her family. She continued her career after the kids were in school working part time as a secretary at the Church of the Brethren located in Brownsville, MD. Donna loved providing support and friendship within the church community until her retirement.
Donna was an avid Washington Redskins and Commanders fan and enjoyed watching football, Orioles baseball and Maryland Terps basketball. Donna had an incredible dish collection that she enjoyed over the years adding to from shopping trips with friends and family.
Donna leaves her husband, Wayne Hawes of Brunswick married for 62 years, three children: Kim Shankle and husband Clint of Jefferson, MD; Dale Hawes and wife Julie of Fredericksburg, VA, and Tod Hawes and Robin Leeney of Martinsburg, WV; six grandchildren Kyle, Megan, Bradley, Curtis, Jonathan and C.J.; and two great-granddaughters Aubrey and Stella. Donna’s mother, Mabel Goodrich, predeceased Donna in 2008. Donna is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Lee DeVoe of Waldorf, MD and her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Pat Goodrich of Brunswick, MD.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to Dr. Mouhamad Bazzi and his incredible team, Frederick Health Hospice and home health care providers Catherine Cook and Tracey Gooding for the kindness and care provided to Donna.
A memorial service by Rev. Tim May will be held at 2:00 pm on November 27th at Stauffer Funeral Home located at 1100 N. Maple Avenue in Brunswick, Maryland. The family will receive friends between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. Graveside services will follow at the Brownsville Heights Cemetery located in Brownsville, Maryland.
