Obituary

Dorothy Marie Lowe, 14, of Sharpsburg, Maryland, passed away peacefully at Meritus Medical Center on Tuesday, March 24, 2025, after courageously living with Type 1 Diabetes for more than ten years.

Dorothy was the beloved daughter of John Wyatt and Stephanie Elaine (Miller) Lowe, and the cherished niece of Dana Marie Penwell. She was an eighth-grade student at Boonsboro Middle School, where she dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. A proud and active member of the Boonsboro Middle School FFA, Dorothy raised and showed goats, chickens, turkeys, and rabbits, chinchillas and guinea pigs. She will be deeply missed by her rabbits, Smokie and Max, and her goat, Angel.

Dorothy was known throughout her neighborhood for walking her dog or goats down the road, greeting every person who passed by. She never met a stranger and had a gift for seeing the good in everyone.

For the past four years, Dorothy played softball with South County Little League. Though small in stature, she was mighty in spirit. Her happiest moments were spent at Serendipity Horse Meadows, where she formed a special bond with her pony, Ariel, who will miss her dearly.

Dorothy was the youngest of six children. She is survived by her sister, Esther Lowe; her brothers, John Jr. and Stephen Lowe; and AJ and Andrew Penwell. She is also survived by her maternal grandparents, Mitchell and Mary Miller of Berryville, Virginia; Uncle Mitch and Erica; Aunts Dottie and Paul Thornley, and Tina and Andy Hernandez; and numerous cousins; and also her “PeePaw and Granny” Eddie and Elizabeth Fisher of Orlando, Florida. She leaves behind her dogs-Boomer, Bella, and Loki-and her horses-Ariel, Mac, Goose, Penny, Princess, and baby Phoenix. Dorothy’s greatest joy was living her best life on her family’s homestead, Sleepy Acre Farm.

She was welcomed into Heaven by her paternal grandfather, Stephen Arthur Lowe; maternal great-grandmothers, Dorothy McGaha and Lorna Bowman; paternal great-grandparents, Esther and Raymond Lowe; her “adopted” uncle, Darrell Glenn Penwell; and her “adopted” grandmother, Wanda Fisher.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2026 at Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at Boonsboro Family Worship Center, 7605 Old National Pike in Boonsboro (across from the funeral home) with Reverend Dan Ricketts officiating. Interment will be private at the family’s request.

A Celebration of Life for Dorothy will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Serendipity Horse Meadows, c/o Deanna Minor, 17907 Spielman Road, Fairplay, MD 21733.
