Dr. E. Frederick Spangler

Lost River

E. Frederick (Fred) Spangler, 80, of Lost River, WV, entered into eternal rest at the South Mountain Rehab Center, Boonsboro, MD on March 13, 2026. He was in failing health and had been valiantly battling prostate cancer. He was the loving companion for 25 years of the late Swiss National Liliana Sutz of Lost River, WV.

Born in New London, CT, on Aug. 3, 1945, he was the son of the late Charles M. Spangler Sr. and Helen Ciavola Spangler of Waynesboro, PA. He was a 1963 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He then received an undergraduate B.S. degree in Biology, from Pennsylvania State University; a Master’s Degree in Microbiology from Louisiana State University, and a PhD, in Physiology and Biophysics, with a minor in Neurobiology, from Georgetown University Medical Center.

Prior to retirement he was Director of USGS/ProQuest Partnership and Manager of Special Projects at ProQuest, Washington D.C. Metro Area, Publishing from 1990-2015.

Dr. Spangler had a very diverse and fulfilling career in teaching, research, and writing scientific publications primarily in neurophysics. He worked in the Washington, D.C. area where he was employed as an Instructor of biology at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, 1974-1976; Cancer research associate Howard University School Medicine, 1977-1978; Assistant professor biology Catholic University American, Trinity College, 1978-1979; Assistant and acting director Cosmetic Ingredient Review Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association, 1977; Founder/president, Sci. and Tech., Sci. and instructor, biology Georgetown University Medical Center 1977 – 1978; Cancer research associate, Howard University School Medicine 1978 – 1979; Assistant, professor biology Catholic University American 1979 – 1980; Assistant, and acting director Cosmetic Ingredient Rev. Cosmetic 1980 – 1987; Project director, cancer research Microbiological Associates; Chief operations officer, ImmuQuest Laboratories Rockville,1987-1988; Naturalist and Visiting Center Manager Black Hill Regional Park, Boyds, Maryland, 1988 – 1990.

Dr. Spangler was the founder and president of the Foundation for Innovation in Research, Science and Technology, Washington Grove; on the Board of directors of L’expert Language Services, Incorporated, Gaithersburg, Maryland; and a member of Physique International, Incorporated, Potomac, Maryland;

During his lifetime, through his research in diabetes, toxicology, neurophysics, and cancer he was a major contributor with 50 articles to professional and general interest publications and chapters to books and was listed in “Who’s Who in America”.

His special interests included Penn State University football, softball, Indo-European History and Languages, Conservation, Stamps, Coins and he held cherished affiliations with The American Association for the Advancement of Science; Humane Society of Hardy County, WV; National Wildlife Federation; Smithsonian Associates; National Audubon Society; National Geographic Society; Wildlife Society, and The American Museum of Natural History.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Charles M. Spangler, II and nephew Karl A. Glocker. He is survived by two brothers, the Rev. Dr. John J. Spangler of Austell, GA; Mark W. Spangler of Waynesboro, PA; and a sister, Bette Sue (Spangler) MacKenzie of Waynesboro, PA. He is survived by five nephews, Dominick Wm. Spangler, Roberto Spangler, Charles M. Spangler, III, David Spangler, Michael Spangler; four nieces, M. Alison MacKenzie, Angela Spangler Clark, Jennifer Spangler Miller, and the Rev. Stephanie Spangler Crossland. Funeral arrangements were handled by Bast – Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, MD 21713.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the discretion of the family at a later date officiated by his brother the Rev. Dr. John Spangler. Public notification will be published when arrangements for the service are finalized.
