Earl Henry “Papa” Duda, 75, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 15, 2026.
Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Earl was the son of the late Henry Leon Duda and Shirley Ellen Duda (née McCormick). Over the years, he lived in many places across the country-including Mt. Holly, North Carolina; Los Alamos, New Mexico; Frederick, Maryland; Kingsport, Tennessee; Richland, Washington; and West Haven, Connecticut-building a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and connection.
Earl shared a loving 53 year marriage with his wife, Patricia Anne Duda (née Canelli) whom he had known since first grade. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Lauren Michelle Mahood (Andrew) and Kim Anne Shippey (Jeffrey). He held a special bond with his sons-in-law, Andrew and Jeffrey, whom he loved as his own. He was an incredibly proud and adoring grandfather to Isabella, Anthony, Vincent, and Gianna Shippey. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Gledhill (Steven).
Earl enjoyed a successful 36-year career with Bechtel Power before continuing his work with The Shaw Group. Outside of his professional life, he was deeply engaged in his interests and community. As a lifetime member of the Amateur Radio Relay League, he was known by his call sign WA1MPB. In his younger years, he served as a volunteer firefighter with West Haven Hook & Ladder Company #1, reflecting his lifelong willingness to help others.
He had a deep love for animals, especially his beloved dog, Ace. Earl was an incredibly proud grandfather whose greatest joy came from his family. He was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and a devoted Parrothead, enjoying the music and spirit of Jimmy Buffett. Known for his humor, warmth, and larger-than-life personality, Earl was someone who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
