Edward David Rothe, a distinguished physicist known for his extensive career at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, passed away on April 24, 2026, at Country Meadows Nursing Home. Born on September 3, 1937, Mr. Rothe’s life was marked by a profound commitment to scientific advancement, professional excellence, and a passion for personal interests that enriched his years beyond the laboratory.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Edward graduated from Luther High School in 1955 before pursuing higher education at the Illinois Institute of Technology. There, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 1959, laying a strong foundation for his future contributions to space science and technology.
Mr. Rothe’s career spanned 35 years, during which he served as a physicist at the prestigious Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. From 1959 until his retirement in 1994, he was deeply involved in pioneering projects that contributed to the understanding of space and atmospheric sciences, reflecting a career defined by dedication and scientific integrity.
Beyond his professional achievements, Edward was an avid gardener and enthusiast of model railroading, pastimes that brought him joy and a creative outlet throughout his life. These interests reflected his meticulous nature and capacity for patience and detail, traits that no doubt complemented his scientific endeavors.
Edward David Rothe is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy L. Rothe, of Frederick, Maryland; his children, Edward S. Rothe of New Oxford, Pennsylvania, Susan R. Shane of New York, and Lisa A. Rothe of Frederick, Maryland. His legacy extends through his grandchildren Daniel Pratt of Fort Bragg, California, Sarah Atkinson of New Hampshire, Chandler Frank of Frederick, Maryland, Erica Binford of Ashburn, Virginia, and Edward J. Rothe of West Virginia, as well as great-grandchild Irena Pratt of Austin, Texas, Kohen Rothe of West Virginia and Emma A. Binford of Ashburn, Virginia. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Linda Rothe.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Edward A. Rothe and Ruth M. Rothe, his sister Sandy Dipper, and his grandson Spencer Frank.
The life and work of Edward David Rothe exemplify a lifetime of scientific inquiry and family devotion. He will be remembered with respect and admiration by colleagues, family, and all who were fortunate to know him.
