Eileen Mercer of Frederick died on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at the age of 91. She was born to Elizabeth and Ellwood Remsberg on December 10, 1934. She grew up on farms near Buckeystown, Lewistown, Long Corner, and Mt. Airy. She was an avid and accomplished sportswoman, participating in basketball and speedball at Mt. Airy High School. As an adult, she enjoyed duckpin bowling, cycling, tennis, and swimming. She also participated in badminton doubles in the Senior Olympics. Her career included working at Cline Furniture and Funeral Service, Frederick F&M National Bank, Frederick County School Board, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
She married Robert V. Mercer in August of 1958, and they shared 51 wonderful years together, nearly all in Monocacy Village. Eileen was a long-time member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederick. Eileen enjoyed playing games of all kinds, gardening, walking in her neighborhood, driving her RV to Myrtle Beach and to sites in Pennsylvania with the Frederick Good Sam Club, and taking trips with Frederick’s Travel Clubs. Eileen was a Volunteer Coordinator at Montevue Assisted Living and Citizens Nursing Home later in life. She also enjoyed assembling scrapbooks about her family heritage, activities, and travel adventures and donated many of them to the Maryland Room in the Burr-Artz Library in Frederick.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband, Robert, two sisters, Doris Lorraine Shipley of Damascus and Margaret Anderson of Walkersville, and a niece, Carolyn Anderson. She is survived by her younger brother, Ellis (Judy) of Yorktown, VA, four nieces, Diane Harman, Joan Carlson, Karen Cox, and Anne Bowes, and six nephews, Kenneth Anderson, Edwin Anderson, Greg Anderson, Mark Remsberg, Scott Mercer, and Richard Mercer.
The family is grateful for the assistance provided to her by Visiting Angels Senior Home Care, the staff at Spring Arbor of Frederick, and Bridging Life Hospice of Westminster.
Services are being provided by Stauffer Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E Church Street, Frederick, MD on Friday, April 24, 2026 at 11:00 am. A private burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Donations may be made to Bridging Life Hospice of Westminster.
