Elizabeth "Libby" Hutchinson Thomas

Elizabeth "Libby" Hutchinson Thomas, 79, of Urbana, Maryland, passed from this life on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at her residence. She was the wife of J. Barry Thomas, her husband of 58 years.

Born on March 13, 1947, in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Alvin Mishler Hutchinson and Elizabeth McCann Hutchinson.

Libby was a 1964 graduate of Cathedral High School in Trenton, NJ as well as the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, MD in 1968, and earned her master’s in education from Bowie State University. She started her career as an elementary school teacher for the Prince George's County Board of Education, retiring in 2000 as the School Principal of Yorktown Elementary School in Bowie, MD.

Libby chose the name "GG" prior to the birth of her first grandchild. The name became her persona and she was called "GG" by all her grandchildren, in addition affectionally by family and friends until her passing.

Libby enjoyed playing golf, her favorite thing was to "Play Nine and Dine" with her golf group in The Villages, FL where she and her husband lived for 13 years until 2020.. She loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren as well as her grand dog "Tank".

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: J. Barry Thomas, Jr. and wife Catherine of Washington, NJ and Jeff Thomas and wife Christene of New Market, MD; six grandchildren: Taylor Thomas, Avery Thomas, Patrick Thomas, Colin Thomas, Nolan Thomas and Gavin Thomas; also her siblings: Alvin "Skip" Hutchinson, his wife Janet Hutchinson of Naples, FL, Andrea Samonsky, her husband John Samonsky of Edgewater, MD, Mary-Elaine Newton of Irvington, VA and the late Christine Pavlov; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 20 at St. Igantius of Loyola Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Rd, Ijamsville, MD 21754. A celebration of life gathering will follow, details will be available at the service.

Interment will take place at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
