Sabillasville

Elizabeth Ellen “Beth” Ruppel (nee Sadler), 81, of Sabillasville, passed on from this life on Thursday, March 28, 2024 after a battle with cancer. She was the loving wife, of 59 years, to John Ruppel.

Beth was born on May 9th, 1942 in Providence, RI to the late Walter and Marion Sadler.  She graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland with the class of 1960, and received an associate degree from Frederick Community college.

Beth was a lifelong Girl Scout, earning the Curved Bar Award as a girl.  She was a leader for many years and became a trainer of other Girl Scout leaders.  She was also involved in Boy Scouting as a leader of a Venture Crew who focused on High Adventure.  She co-led multiple BSA High Adventure trips to Philmont, BSA Sea Base, and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  She was Treasurer for many years of Scouting, Inc., serving the youth of Thurmont.

She started as a volunteer classroom aide at Mother Seton when her children attended.  She eventually worked for the school as bookkeeper, which inspired her to earn her Associate's Degree in Business Administration and Accounting.

Beth was a dedicated team member of the Challenges program of Frederick County Public Schools working with autistic students.  She retired as a teacher’s aide from FCPS, but continued as a substitute teacher when called upon.

She was a volunteer EMT in three volunteer fire companies, Emmitsburg Vigilant Hose Company, Thurmont Community Ambulance Service, and Fountaindale VFD (Pennsylvania).  She was on the board of directors at Fountaindale VFD.  She volunteered countless hours at Vigilant Hose Company to help with bingo, and could be found helping with various events for Thurmont Community Ambulance Service.

In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her sister, Penelope Ziepolt; her son, Thomas Ruppel and wife, Lis; her daughter, Joan Hertel and husband, Bill; her nephew, Ted Stringer and wife, Nancy; seven grandchildren, David, Heather, Brandon, Colin, Dylan, Corwyn and Galen; four great-grandchildren, Savannah, Elizabeth, Michael and Amy; and great-nephew, Colin.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Leland; sister-in-law, Ruth; sister, Merle; brother-in-law, Glenn; and niece, Stephanie.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont.

Private burial will be held at the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to be made, in her name, to a favorite charity.
