Eugene “Gene” Stitely, 68, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, November 24, 2023.

He was born on January 4, 1955, to the late Norman Stitely and Marjorie (Dewees) Stitely.

He retired after more than thirty years of working as a civil servant for the U.S. Army at Fort Detrick, Maryland. He was an American Cancer Society volunteer and supported the American Red Cross with blood and platelet donations for over thirty years.

Gene was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed golf, basketball, and baseball. He played baseball in college for Frederick Community College and Mount St. Mary's University. The Maryland Terrapins, and the Boston Red Sox were his favorite teams. He greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren on the lake, and time on the golf course with family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Stitely, children; Scot Stitely (Mandy), David Stitely (Victoria), grandchildren, Lily, and Logan, and mother-in-law Dolly Long. He is also survived by his siblings, Mike Stitely (Ila), Pat Coover, and Jerry Stitely, along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son Brent Michael Stitely, and father-in-law Charles Long.

Funeral services will be private at the request of the family.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street in Thurmont, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gene’s memory to The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Frederick County, 405 Williams Court Suite 120 Baltimore, Maryland 21220.
