Mrs. Evangeline Theon Whibley, age 98, of Frederick, passed away Thursday, April 2, 2026, in the Health Care Unit at Homewood Living at Frederick. She was born Oct. 16, 1927 at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Lewis and Merope Theon.
Evangeline was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Harry Whibley; her son, Harry L. “Butch” Whibley; and her daughter, Barbara W. Wagner.
She was named for her maternal grandmother and was very proud of her Greek heritage; her father came to America from Mesolongi, Greece, and her mother grew up in Istanbul, Turkey.
She began her career in the typing pool, then advanced to administrative assistant at NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, where she worked for 23 years; she then spent nine years as the Supervisor of Rent Supplement Program in Montgomery County government. She became a dedicated volunteer at the Frederick Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, where she also served as manager. She was very proud of this position and trained 104 new volunteers over the 26 years she worked there.
She was a member of the Gambrill Park Homemakers Club, the Rose Hill Garden Club, as well as Grace Brethren Church, where she enjoyed helping the youth group and serving in the nursery.
She was also a talented artist, painting numerous still lifes and landscapes.
Known as “Eve” to many friends and co-workers, she was always upbeat and optimistic, with a cheerful, sunny outlook and a radiant smile.
Evangeline was a loving wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother who truly enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her brother, John S. Theon (Joanne); her son, John Whibley of Woodsboro, MD; her son-in-law, Richard Wagner of Chambersburg, PA; grandsons Robert and Ian Whibley; granddaughters Michelle L. Carpenter (Scott) and Amy L. Reis (Andrew); great-grandchildren Camden and Brett Ricketts, and Gabriel, Bethany, and Thora Mintz; nephew Chris J. Theon (Susan) and niece Cathy T. McKeon (Tim), and 10 great nephews and great nieces.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel at Homewood Living Frederick on Sunday, April 19 at 2pm. Address: 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, MD.
