Mr. George “Pap” William Fulmer, Sr., 96, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025. George was born on February 24, 1929, in Frederick, Maryland, to the late Charles V. Fulmer and Mary (Moberly) Fulmer. George was married to Mary Gladys (Blank) Fulmer for 63 wonderful years until her death in 2013.

George spent his childhood in Frederick, graduating from the old Elm Street School in 1942 and later enlisting in the United States Army in 1946 at the age of 17, with his parents’ permission. After completing basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was sent to Germany and served as a military policeman in Garmisch and later discharged in 1949 at the rank of Corporal.

Over the years, George worked many different jobs, each one approached with dedication and a strong work ethic. Jobs at Gambrill Feed Mill, B&O Railroad Signal Division, Frederick Iron and Steel and a security guard at Fort Detrick from 1951-1959 when he then went to work with his family at his father’s upholstery shop, eventually opening ‘George’s Custom Upholstery’ on Edgewood Church Road, from 1968-1990. In 1962, George was hired as a substitute clerk/carrier at the Frederick Post Office, eventually retiring in 1984 with a total of 33 years of government service. He later worked for the City of Frederick as a nightman from 1985-1991 and as a cashier and night security from 1992-2014 when he again retired. Although he held many roles over the years, it was his 18 years as a paid driver for Frederick County Fire & Rescue at Independent Hose Co. 1 that he loved most.

Throughout his life, George found meaning and community in the organizations he joined. He was a life member of the Independent Hose Co. 1, BPO Elks #684, Amvets Post #9, VFW Post #3285, American Legion Post #11 and Associate Life Member of Post #78, 29th Division Association.

George could be seen on the side porch every morning, reading the Frederick News Post, having his morning coffee and a smoke.

George is survived by two sons, George W. (Bill), Jr. (Tammie) and Gregory S. Fulmer (Bobbi); daughter, Teresa K. Burrill; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by an infant son, Richard A. in 1956; and daughter, Cindy L. Deater in 2008; sisters, Eleonora Fulmer, Mary E. Culler, Betty J. Flohr, Bonnie J. Kardeen, Effie L. Fulmer and Dorothy E. Droneburg; brothers, Claude L. and Charles R. Fulmer; and son-in-law, Richard Burrill.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Frederick Health Hospice and special caregivers Melinda, Nancy, and Rayna for their compassion and dedicated care during George’s final days.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

George was very proud to have been a volunteer firefighter and driver at the Independent Hose Company, therefore, in lieu of flowers, he has requested donations be made to the Independent Hose Co. 1, 310 Baughmans Lane, Frederick, MD.
