George J. Poddo, 76, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away surrounded by loving family on June 10, 2025.
George was born on September 22, 1948, at Palmerton Hospital in Pennsylvania, the son of George Poddo and Marjorie Barrons Poddo. He spent his early years at 169 West Broadway in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, where he attended Immaculate Conception grade school and Jim Thorpe High School. After graduation, he continued his education at Lincoln Technology in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
In 1968, George was hired by IBM in Fishkill, New York, beginning a distinguished 40-year career with the company. Those who knew him said he “bled blue” for IBM, reflecting his deep loyalty and love for his work. In retirement, George continued his love of community service by working as an usher for the Frederick Keys baseball team.
After dating for five years, George married Joanie Wilson in 1969, who was truly the love of his life. Together, they raised four children in their forever home in Wappingers Falls, New York, where they lived for 40 years. In 2006, George and Joanie moved to Frederick, Maryland, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
George was actively involved in his community throughout his life. In his younger years, he was a member of the SW Johnson firehouse, coached various youth sports for many years, and was a member of the Whortlekill Rod and Gun Club. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. George also had a passion for gardening and was a Maryland Master Gardener. He was a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan who loved the game of baseball.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joanie; his daughter Lori Sawyer (Cary); sons Michael (Cindy) and Stephen; and his sister Maria of Palmerton, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his brothers Michael, Thomas, Stephen, Patrick, and Paul Wilson, and was beloved by all his nieces and nephews. He was lovingly known as “Poppy” to his 11 grandchildren, whom he adored. George was predeceased by his precious daughter Stacey in 2020, and his sisters Ann, Margie, and Patti.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Frederick - and the family extends their heartfelt gratitude for their care and compassion in the final days. (https://www.frederickhealthhospice.org/donate-support/ways-to-give/)
