With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Gilbert Samuel Brown Jr., 84, of Mount Airy, MD. He went home peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Born in Rockville, MD, to Gilbert Samuel Brown Sr and Iola A. (Archer) Brown, Gil gave his life to Christ at an early age. He devoted his life to faith, family, and service in the church. Gil worked for many years as a service technician for Washington Gas and Light Company, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. He could also build or repair anything and willingly offered his skills to friends or crafting something beautiful in his wood shop. Upon his retirement, he became an ordained Baptist Minister, faithfully serving in Baptist churches throughout the area. After moving to Mount Airy in 1992, he became an active member of Mount Airy Baptist Church serving in various ministries.
Above all, Gil was a loving husband to Mary Jo, a devoted father to Debbi, Scott, and Holly, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather. He led his family with quiet strength, living out his faith daily through humility, integrity, and love.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jo Brown; his children, Debbi King (Jimmy), Scott Brown (Debbie), and Holly Haynes (Chuck); his grandchildren, Rodney Haynes (Melissa), Amber Reed (David), Haley Pennington (Matthew), Jeffrey Morton (Kayla), Zachary Morton (Brittney), Samuel Morton (Rebecca), Nathan Brown (Emily), Cole Haynes (Lauren), Nicholas Brown (Peyton), and Sophia Brown as well as 14 great grandchildren, siblings Steven Brown (Bobby), Rick Brown (Joan), Denise Schmidt (Don) and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Steven.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 11 from 4-7 PM at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mt. Airy. A celebration of Gil’s life will be held on Friday, September 12, at 11 AM at the M. Airy Baptist Church, 1402 N. Main St. in Mt. Airy, with the burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy. The family warmly invites all who were touched by his life to join in remembering a man who lived faithfully in service to God and others.
