Grace Rebekah Smith, 85, of Wolfsville passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Meritus as a result of a fall causing a hip fracture.

Born December 19, 1937, in Wolfsville on the family farm in which she resided until her passing. Grace was the daughter of the late Gorman Josiah and Bertie Gertrude Grossnickle Smith. She was the youngest of four children.

Ms. Smith was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Wolfsville. She loved tending to her many beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, on any given day you would be hard pressed to find a weed. She had a gift for quilting and had quilted numerous beautiful quilts over the years. She enjoyed antique shopping especially for glassware and was always up for a ride through the countryside. She had a heart of gold for all of God’s four legged creatures both great and small, especially dogs and is survived by her faithful and devoted companion, Jonie Josiah also affectionately known as Mr. Smith.

She was a lifelong dairy farmer in Frederick County, helping in various capacities on the family farm since she was a young girl. She truly loved her family, friends, and many special neighbors.

She graduated from Middletown High School, class of 1956 and would often reminisce of her school days.

She is survived by her sister, Doris Edna Gaver and husband Merle, sister in law Gladys Beachley Smith all of Myersville, Nephew Kevin Gaver and wife, Lisa, Nieces Lisa Ann Burtner and husband Brad, Sharon LaRue Steger and husband Thomas, and Jennifer Rebecca Brandenburg and husband Charles all of Myersville.  Great nieces Abby Dillon and husband Chris, Molly Yarrington and husband Shane, Brittney Mercer, Gretchen Gawler and husband Will , Haven Brandenburg and fiancé Kevin Lynott and great nephew, Jacob Charles Josiah Brandenburg. She is survived by great-great nephews Reese Dillon and Atticus Yarrington and great-great nieces Finley Yarrington and Ruby Dillon. She is also survived by dear friends Marge and Clair Lee Leatherman and Cinda Morgan. She was predeceased by her sister Viola Virginia Smith and her brother Charles Upton Smith and one special dear friend Hilda Cartee.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mertius for their attention and care they provided to Grace during her time at the hospital, especially the nursing staff of four east.

 

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023 at St Mark’s Lutheran Church 12701 Wolfsville Road Smithsburg, MD. Services will begin at 11 a.m. with interment immediately following in the church cemetery. Pastor Eric Moser will officiate. A light lunch will be provided after the service.

 

Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Gaver, Thomas Steger, Charles Brandenburg, Walter Bussard, Denny Smith and Collin Delauter.  Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Bussard, Robert Lee Grossnickle and Edward Smith.

 

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Ms. Smith’s memory to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 12704 Wolfsville Road Smithsburg, MD or the charity of one’s choice.
