It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Lee "Greg" Van Ginkel, 51, of Frederick, Maryland. Greg passed peacefully at home on October 22, 2025, after his battle with ALS. He was the loving husband of Jennifer Van Ginkel.
Born on December 30, 1973, in Upland, CA, he was the son of Calvin Lee Van Ginkel and Patty Van Ginkel. Greg graduated from Upland High School in 1992 after lettering in cross country. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998 from California State University Fullerton and went on to earn his Master of Science in Engineering Management from National University in 2009.
Greg’s amazing career spanned over 20 years in the defense contract industry. He was well respected amongst his colleagues for his dedication and contributions to the mission. Greg worked for BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, Praxis Engineering, and was most recently the Director of Strategy for Visionist, Inc.
Greg was a devoted family member and spent several years coaching his children in flag football, volleyball, and basketball. He was a lifelong 49ers fan, a lover of 80s music, was a firm believer that life was better at the beach, and was happiest doing home improvement or wood working projects.
Even after Greg was diagnosed with ALS in 2024, he worked tirelessly to support and raise awareness for the disease. Along with Visionist, Inc., Greg helped to develop an app that enables ALS patients to track their progression. He was an active contributor to the HALS PALS ALS Support Group and raised thousands of dollars for the ALS Association for funding and research. His family founded The Greg Van Ginkel ALS Fund to support others impacted by the disease by providing grants for quality-of-life assistance.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his children Brayden Lee Van Ginkel and Emma Ashlynn Van Ginkel, his sister Stephanie Noelle Van Ginkel, in-laws Bill and Judi Harwell, brother-in-law Payton Jake Harwell, sister-in-law Stacy Marie Harwell, and niece Kaylee Makenzie Quirino.
The family will receive friends from 3pm-5pm on Saturday, November 15th at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 16th at 11am at Stauffer Funeral Home in Frederick at 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick MD 21702. Immediately following the service, we will continue to celebrate Greg’s incredible life at RAK Brewery in Frederick. Since Greg’s favorite color was blue, we would love people in attendance to wear blue as a tribute to him.
