Guy “Dutch” Gary Cunningham, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at the age of 88, in Rockville, MD with his family by his side. Guy was born on February 16, 1936, in Martinsburg, WV, he was the son of the late John Samuel Cunningham and Alice June (Fravel) Cunningham. He was the second youngest and last surviving of eight children.
Guy graduated from Brunswick High School in 1954 and then served in the United States Army as a Medical Specialist where he received his training for his 35-year career at The National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Neuromuscular Disease Biopsy Technician. In his work at NIH, he co-authored and published multiple studies on muscle tissue.
In high school, he played soccer, basketball, and baseball. He played basketball and softball with the Brunswick High Alumni Association in his adult years before adopting golf as his sport of choice. He played golf until his health declined in 2023.
Guy “Dutch” was a member of the Moose International, the Brunswick American Legion, the Eagles Club, and the Masonic Lodge.
He resided in Montgomery County for the past 35 years however, he always considered Brunswick to be his true home.
Guy's family and extended family were so important to him. He was a proud father and he got immense joy from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by life partner, Nancy Schulze; sons, Gordon “Buddy” Keith Cunningham and Guy Gary Cunningham, Jr.; and his daughter, Chrystal Lee (Cunningham) Reed. He is also survived by Scot Schulze; Lori (Schulze) Kocur; 7 Grandchildren (David “Davey” Cunningham, Dalton Reed, Chase Reed, Matthew Schulze, Todd Schulze, Andrew Kocur, Brandon Kocur; and six great-grandchildren.
Guy chose to be cremated and per his wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Guy’s final resting place will be on a beach where he can forever watch the sunrise.
