Harry Donald “Shorty” Long, 90, of Walkersville, Maryland, passed away on Monday, September 28th at Frederick Health Hospital.

Born on May 16, 1936, in Westminster, Maryland, Shorty was the son of the late Alva Theodore Long and Viola (Chipley) Long. He was the beloved husband of Elisabeth "Liesl" Marie (Wetzstein) Long, who preceded him in death on February 10, 2019, after 61 years of marriage.

Shorty enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 12, 1954, and completed basic training at Sampson Air Force Base in New York. In January 1955, he finished specialized training as a telephone cableman at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming, and was then assigned to the 317th Troop Carrier Wing in Germany, where he served until 1957. It was in Germany that he met Liesl, and together they began a lifelong adventure of traveling the world and raising a family.

His military career took him to Germany, France, Goose Bay (Labrador, Canada), Vandenberg AFB (California), Spain, Wright-Patterson AFB (Ohio), Vietnam, Turkey (NATO), and Barksdale AFB (Louisiana). He retired from the Air Force in November 1976 and went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Frederick, Maryland.

Shorty loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and, above all, spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, quick wit, and loving nature, and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughters, Marion Chrest (Ron), Karin McClanathan (John), and Tina Moir (David); grandchildren Jaime VanHorn, Jessie Brown, and Brandon Chrest; and great-grandchildren Bronson Brown, Carson Brown, Morgan VanHorn, Bryson Chrest, and Brooklyn Chrest. He is also survived by his brothers, James W. Long and Alva E. Long, and his sister, Alvarene Mae Stambaugh.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Glade Cemetery in Walkersville, Maryland. A celebration of Shorty's life will follow at Village Crossing in Worman's Mill, Frederick, Maryland.
