Helen Louise Smith

Mrs. Helen Louise Smith, 94, of Walkersville passed away on Friday, March 2, 2007, at College View Center, Frederick. She was the wife of the late Cedric H. Smith who passed away on April 20, 1993.

Born on December 23, 1912, in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stethers. She and her family moved to Hagerstown in the late 1940's and then to Walkersville in the early 1950's. Helen was a devout member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Walkersville since 1958. For many years she taught Adult Sunday School, was a member of the Women of ELCA, the 3F Class and the Social Ministries Committee. She was a member of the Walkersville Homemakers Club for more than 50 years and taught the 4 year olds in Mrs. Betty Hooper's Walkersville Nursery School. Helen served as a volunteer for the Frederick Literacy Council, she also served on the committee to form the Walkersville Food Bank where she worked as a volunteer since its inception in August of 1990.

She is survived by her son, Philip M. Smith of Walkersville; a grandson, Robbie Wardwell and wife Becky of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Cindy Tillson and husband Bernerd of Sparta, GA; 4 great grandchildren: Meredith and Cole Wardwell and Joe and Patrick Tillson.

Helen was preceded in death by a daughter, Francine Wardwell and brothers, Ronald and Robert Stethers.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, March 4, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 40 Fulton Avenue in Walkersville.

Services: Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 5, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 14 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville with Rev. Mark L. Foucart officiating.

Interment will be in Glade Cemetery, Walkersville with Leo Duncan, Lin Snider, Jim Titmae, Charles A. Nicodemus, Ray Isaacs, and Joel Herman serving as pallbearers.
