James Francis Ryan, of Adamstown, Maryland, passed away at age 80 on May 15, 2026. Born in Ithaca, New York, Jim lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional achievement, and devotion to family.
Jim grew up in Waynesboro, Virginia, with his parents, James F. Ryan, Jr. and Regenia “Jeanne” Ryan, his younger brother Terry, and his younger sister Regenia, known as Reggie. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University of Pennsylvania, where he studied Chemistry. After the death of his parents when he was 21, Jim became the guardian of his younger siblings. He was aided by Dr. Beverly Loesch Blakely, who later adopted the three Ryan siblings and cared for them as part of her own family. Jim was able to continue his studies at the University of Virginia, where he earned a PhD in Chemistry and met his wife and lifelong partner, Mary Ann.
Jim’s professional career in chemistry spanned a variety of roles across both the public and private sectors. Career highlights included work with the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment and the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the scientific instrumentation company PerkinElmer. Later in his career, he combined his scientific expertise with his talent for communication as a writer and editor for the American Chemical Society.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim had a passion for computers and electronics. He kept up with developments in software and communications devices and was often the person others turned to for help with technology questions.
Those who knew Jim remember him as a man of intelligence and humor who loved conversation and connection. He was a dedicated husband, father, brother, and mentor who cared deeply for friends and family.
Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his son Jason (Susan), with grandchildren Lucas and Ella; his daughter Jeanne Dimmick (Darrin), with grandchildren Dalton, Jordis, and Brynne. He is also survived by his brother Terry Ryan (Beverly). He is the proud uncle of many nieces and nephews on both sides of his family. He was predeceased by his sister, Regenia Ryan.
A memorial celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM at All Saints Church, located at 106 W Church St in Frederick, Maryland. A reception will immediately follow on the premises.
