IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Richard
Stevenson
July 6, 1935 – February 12, 2026
Celebration of Life
Homewood at Crumland Farms
2:30 - 3:30 pm (Eastern time)
James Richard (Dick) Stevenson, age 90, of Frederick, Maryland, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
Dick was born on July 6, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the third of four children to Lloyd Wilson Stevenson and Esther Parsons Stevenson. He is survived by wife of 39 years, Margo; sons, Jim (Betsy), Jeff (Mary Anne), and Jon (Cindy); eight grandchildren, Jack (Rachael), Rick, Anna, Julia, Jeffrey, Jonny, Kimmy, and Rob; one great- grandson, Lucas; and by his brother, Bill.
Though friends and colleagues called him Dick, he will be most remembered by those who called him Dad, Grandpa, Pop Pop and Poppy. Dick took great pride in his sons, his daughters (in-law), his amazing grandchildren, and the recent arrival, great-grandson, Lucas. He was a loving and consistently present father and grandfather, always ready to drop whatever he was doing to come to the aid of family.
Dick had a deep faith that permeated his life. He served faithfully in numerous ministry roles at various churches, sang with numerous church choirs, and found a special calling as a member of his beloved National Christian Choir. He loved Jesus.
Dick spent his professional life dedicated to the education of children. Initially a teacher, he spent most of his 38-year career as an elementary school principal. He was a graduate of Montclair State Teachers College and held a master’s degree in education. Dick retired from the Montgomery County Public Schools in 1995. He used his retirement to explore new arenas and develop new skills. In addition to boldly beginning to sing in choirs, he served as a tour guide at the U.S. Naval Academy, drove a delivery truck, and built homes with Habitat for Humanity.
Dick loved to laugh and to make others laugh as well. He was the king of Dad jokes before they were a thing. Those who knew him, particularly later in life, knew him as friendly and jovial, always initiating conversation and bringing a smile. One of his favorite activities was reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas! to school children every Christmas.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2026 in the Chapel at Homewood, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, Maryland.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers, to The National Christian Choir, PO Box 1600, Germantown, MD 20875.
