Janic J. Nefflen

Janic J. Nefflen, 76, of Frederick, Maryland passed away Monday, July 27, 2026. Born March 13, 1950, in Masontown, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Jesso. She attended both California State University of Pennsylvania and Western Maryland University, earning both her Bachelors, Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Elementary Education. Jan taught at Yellow Springs Elementary school in Frederick for over 35 years. During her tenure, Janic taught Third Grade, educating over 4,500 students and working with their families in the Frederick area. She was also a cub scout den leader, baseball coach, and after school tutor for many throughout Frederick County. She retired from teaching in 2012.

Upon retirement, Jan remained active in the community by working and volunteering with Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center of Frederick Auxiliary, Montevue Assisted Living, Frederick Women’s Civic Club, Alpha Delta Kappa Upsilon, Frederick County Reading Council, Meals on Wheels, Heartly House and the United Way of Frederick County. When not engaged in serving the community, she was active with the Frederick County Public School Retirees, Red Hat Group and other social groups of retired educators.

Janic is survived by her husband of 49 years, F.N. Nefflen; her son, Benjamin Nefflen of Chambersburg, PA; and Nathaniel Nefflen of Frederick, MD. She is also survived by her brothers, Nicholas Jesso of Masontown, PA and Timothy Jesso of Apollo Beach, FL; nieces, nephews, cousins; and friends in MD and PA.

The family will receive family and friends beginning on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, where a funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 pm. Following the Frederick service, Janic will be transported to Masontown, Pennsylvania for a viewing at Maykuth Funeral Home, 7 River Rd, on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at 1:00 pm, with internment service on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Jacob’s Lutheran Cemetery, 342 Lutheran Church Rd, Masontown, PA.
