Jean Appleton Thompson, 96, of Frederick, Maryland was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Reston Hospital in Reston, Virginia. She was the wife of the late Dr. Joseph Kyle Thompson.
Born Helen Jean Appleton on February 16, 1929, she was the youngest child of the late John and Jettie (Jamison) Appleton of Coral, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She grew up on the family farm, survived a bout of rheumatic fever as a child, and graduated from Homer City High School. At age 19, the federal government came recruiting, and she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI. She later worked for the Naval Research Laboratory before becoming a full-time homemaker, carpool driver and school field trip chaperone. Joseph, Jean and family lived 35 years in Camp Springs, MD before moving to Frederick, MD in 1991 to enjoy their retirement years.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Frederick Presbyterian Church. She was previously a charter member of the Camp Springs Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon, Financial Secretary and was active in the women’s Evening Circle. She enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening and finding bargains.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; sister, Louise LoPresti (Ernest); and brother, Paul Appleton (LaRue). She is survived by her three sons, John Thompson of Riverdale Park, MD, James Thompson of Reston, VA, and Jeffrey Thompson of Austin, TX. She also has numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Frederick Presbyterian Church, 115 W. Second Street in Frederick, MD. Funeral services will be held beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church with Rev. Dr. Eric T. Myers officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Presbyterian Church or to the charity of one's choice.
