Vernon always fondly remembered his summer visits to his mother’s family farm in North Carolina during the war years.

John Vernon Galloway, 90, of Frederick, Maryland, went home to be with the Lord on July 21, 2026. Born on November 3, 1935 in North Carolina, he was the son of the late Noah Randolph Galloway and Katie Gould (Whichard) Galloway.

Vernon grew up in Baltimore, Maryland but always fondly remembered his summer visits to his mother’s family farm in North Carolina during the war years. He graduated from Patterson Park High School in 1953. Vernon then attended Johns Hopkins University on an ROTC scholarship where he earned a degree in engineering. Later, he earned a master’s degree from Hopkins.

It was while he was an undergraduate at Hopkins that he met his wife, Barbara. They were married for 65 years before she died in 2023. Vernon served in the Army Corps of Engineers and in the reserves before being honorably discharged as a Captain. After his active duty in the Army, Vernon worked for Western Electric as a manufacturing engineer. Most of his career was spent at the Dundalk plant in Baltimore but he also worked in Reading, PA and Silver Spring, MD. After retiring from Western Electric, he worked for Gettysburg College as a microcomputer technician.

Vernon had a love of learning. His interests were eclectic; he enjoyed history, math, and science, as well as a good mystery or work of science fiction. His mother once commented that he loved to take things apart and put them back together. An amateur photographer, he built a darkroom in his parent’s basement. As an adult, he enjoyed doing all his home repairs and spent many enjoyable hours building a two-story barn. He embraced technological changes and enjoyed keeping up with new advances in computers and cell phones. Social media was used to connect with distant relatives and he appreciated the ability to stay in touch with family members by texting. Vernon served for a number of years as an elder at the Piney Creek Presbyterian Church. His faith was a great comfort to him, especially in his later years.

He is survived by his sister Elsie Ellis, his son John Galloway, his daughter Deborah Tuel, son-inlaw Stephen, and grandchildren Jessica Tuel and Bethany Tuel and their spouses. Vernon will be fondly remembered and missed by his family. The family wishes to thank the staff at Somerford Place and Somerford House for their kind and loving care in his last few years.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 2:00 PM at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church, 8158 Yellow Springs Road, Frederick.
