John A. Hargett, Jr.

John A. Hargett, Jr. of Monrovia, formerly from Gaithersburg, Washington Grove, and Boyds, passed away at the age of 101 on June 11, 2024 at Lorien Mt. Airy.  He was predeceased by Mary Bart Hargett, his beloved wife of 65 years. 

Born January 20, 1923 in Gaithersburg, he was the son of the late John A. Hargett, Sr. and Blanche Mills Hargett.  John attended six years at a two-room school house in Washington Grove and graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1940.  During his life he had been a carpenter, farmer, businessman, and mechanic.  He retired at the age of 80 after 40+ years with Bensons Garage Door Company. 

John served his country during WWII as the Crew Chief on a C-47 transport plane in the China-Burma-India theater of war.  Among his medals is the Distinguished Flying Cross, and he is a member of the American Legion Post 171 in Damascus.  John was a long-time member of the Flower Hill Church of the Brethren in Derwood serving terms as financial secretary and building committee member.  He later transferred his membership to Bush Creek Church of the Brethren in Monrovia. 

John is survived by his three daughters: Joyce Clint King (Henry) of Mt. Airy, Janet Hargett Poppe (William) of Aurora IL., and Judy Clarkson Price (Cecil) of Manchester, MD.; grandchildren Caprice Ricketts, Matthew Clint, Christopher Poppe, Kimberly Ahlert, Megan McDermott, Andrea Price, Bradley Price; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  John is also survived by his sister Esther King Rogers of Dillsburg, PA.  He is predeceased by brothers Charles and Thomas, sisters Lucille, Lillian Beall, Mary Crown, Martha Briggs, and Shirley Kitzmiller, and grandson Brian Clint. 

Graveside services will be held at Bush Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery on Friday, June 28, at 11:00 AM.
