It is with great sadness that we announced the passing of John James Mahares, age 78, of Ijamsville , MD, On Sunday, July 20, 2025, surrounded by his immediate family John went to be with the Lord after a brief illness that left him hospitalized. He was the loving husband of Louise Mahares his wife of 46 years.
He was the son of the late James Mahares and the late Georgia Constantine Mahares. John and Louise had 3 children; Heather Mayo and husband Derrin of Ijamsville and Dawn Hutzell and husband TJ of Rohrersville. He was proceeded in death by his beloved son John David Mahares. Everyone that knew John, knew him by Pop Pop which he wore with honor. He will be greatly remembered by his 6 grandchildren Chad, Keith, Chelsey, Alyson, Jenna and Reece and 4 great grandchildren Damian, Karter, Gavin and Everly. They all touched his life tremendously. John also has one surviving sister Paula Stull and her children Pamelyn Sullivan and Mark Stull of Frederick.
He retired from the elevator trade in Local Union 10, after more than 35 of years service.
John lived a simple life, doing the things he loved and very seldom complaining about anything. Followed by his retirement he spent his free time spending endless hours and days creating wonderful memories with his family. He loved when family came to visit and his favorite hobbies were bicycling, walking, boxing, he won the Golden Glove Championship title in the 70’s. He could often be found in his garage tinkering on his many projects. John enjoyed spending time with his family in their home telling amazing stories and the adventures he encountered throughout his life . Everyone loved his stories and most stories were even followed by a Bible study because John was a righteous, kind, and loving Christian man.
Prior to his passing, John expressed deeply that he wants to be remembered by the good memories he created, the Bible verses he spoke, and the love he showed to everyone that he met. He said “ do not cry for me because I will be at peace, and with my Lord and Savior “
