Listen to Obituary

John Edward Stittgen, Sr., passed away June 25, 2026, at the age of 76.

Born on April 21, 1950, in Waukegan, Illinois, John lived a life defined by service, faith, and devotion to his children. He proudly served his country in the United States military for 24 years as a dental hygienist. During his distinguished military career, he was stationed in numerous locations, including Korea and Germany, before concluding his service at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. He earned numerous medals and commendations in recognition of his dedication and exemplary service.

Following his retirement from the military, John continued to serve others through his unwavering faith and volunteer work. He was a longtime member of Good News Presbyterian Church in Frederick, Maryland, where he faithfully worshiped and built lasting friendships. He also found great joy in volunteering at the Frederick Rescue Mission, where he quietly and compassionately served those in need.

John treasured time with his family above all else. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Whether enjoying a meal at a favorite restaurant, shopping with family, or taking one of his many long walks—often traversing nearly every corner of Frederick—he found happiness in life's simple pleasures and in the company of those he loved.

John was preceded in death by his father, Edward John Stittgen, and his sister, Laureen Johnson.

He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Virginia Porras, and his stepfather, Dave Porras, who helped raise him. He is also survived by his brother, Dale Stittgen, and three half-brothers.

John leaves behind his four beloved children: John Stittgen and his wife, Renae; Rebecca Wisner and her husband, Taney; Rachel Jaax and her husband, Jason; and Jason Stittgen and his wife, Jamilla. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren. He is also remembered by his former wife, Janice Stittgen, with whom he shared many years of raising their family.

John will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet strength, steadfast faith, and lifelong commitment to serving both his country and his community. His legacy lives on through his family, the many lives he touched through his service, and the example of compassion, humility, and love that he shared with all who knew him.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702, on July 2 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome to join the family for a luncheon immediately following the service at Brookfield Farms, 8302 Ramsburg Road, Thurmont, MD 21788. A private family interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
