Jon H. Brundage, a man of profound intellect, athletic determination, and a lifelong commitment to service, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Jon carried the values of duty and honor throughout his multifaceted career. His Army career featured assignments in Beirut following the Marine Barracks bombing, support to various Joint endeavors, and stints in defense of the Republic of Korea.
Jon’s intellectual pursuits led him to earn a PhD in Information Systems, and his innovative spirit was cemented by the award of a U.S. patent. He was a dedicated educator who shared his expertise as an instructor at the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), where he mentored countless students.
Jon’s service extended beyond the classroom and the military, as a volunteer paramedic with the local Independent Hose Company Fire & Rescue Station #1.
His physical discipline was equally legendary. A lifelong martial arts practitioner, Jon demonstrated world-class tenacity by trying out for the 1980 U.S. Olympic Judo team. When he wasn’t on the mat or in the classroom, he found his greatest peace on the water. An avid sailor, he spent many of his happiest hours navigating the wind and waves.
Jon is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy; his children, MAJ (Ret) Matt (and Beth) Brundage, and Rev Katherine (and John) Branter. He was also the beloved Pops of Grace, Quinn, Henry, Delaney, and Eloise. All of whom carry forward his legacy of curiosity, peskiness, and helpfulness. He also leaves behind his brothers, Eric (and Jenny) Brundage and Terry Brundage. He also leaves a large extended family whom he loved and cared for deeply and supported in whatever ways he could.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12th at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, with a meal following at Independent Hose Company Station #1.
A private burial will take place at a later date in West Point, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jon’s honor to Independent Hose Company Fire and Rescue Station #1 or to the West Point Judo team at https://alumni.westpointaog.org/giveonline - Judo Team Fund.
